Originally scheduled to premiere on June 16 at the Carib Theatre in Kingston, the Bashment Granny Movie has reportedly been delayed by Stages Films, as it seeks to explore additional distribution arrangements with a number of industry players. The film, which is based on the extremely popular stage play of the same name, has reportedly sparked interest, particularly in the North American market. Executive producer, Bunny Allen, has said that although discussions are still in the very early stages, they thought it best to delay the film in order to examine further options.

According to Allen, “Even though this is our first major film, we are working towards achieving international success. We have made an enormous investment to ensure that the technical and production quality matches international standards and that has attracted quite a bit of interest to the project. Delaying the premiere will give us the opportunity to attempt the expansion of our market beyond our original target … We are in it for the long haul and based on our projections, it is important to us that we master the process as soon as possible. Bashment Granny has opened the door and we intend to make full use of the opportunity. Our sister company Stages Productions is known for innovations in local theatre, that’s the kind of advancement we intend to make in the local film industry.”

The movie now looks likely to open at the end of the year. According to Allen, “An official announcement will be made shortly on the new date of the premiere and audiences can also look out for a number of activities leading up to that date.” There are a number of activities which are slated to take place ahead of the premiere including the official launch of the movie’s website as well as the music video for the title track featuring Abigail ‘Babilita’ Grant.

Bashment Granny, the movie, was written and directed by Paul O. Beale and edited by Joel Burke. The film features a host of local stars including Garfield ‘Bad Boy Trevor’ Reid, Keith ‘Shebada’ Ramsay, Maxwell ‘Maama Man’ Grant, Stede ‘Jooky Jam’ Flash, Abigail ‘Babilita’ Grant and Deon Silvera. Click here to view the Bashment Granny movie trailer.

The Bashment Granny play has been a phenomenal success, so much so that a movie spin-off is in the works. Angel, Shebada, Mr Bashment, Half-a-Dog and the rest of the gang will all be featured in the Bashment Granny movie, which should be in cinemas by the end of 2009. In addition to all the regular actors/characters in the play, the Bashment Granny movie will feature a number of new faces including the comedic duo Apache Chief and Sarge, Trudy Bell, Donald Thompson and Patrick Smith.

The script for the movie was, of course, adapted from the script for the play, so those who have seen the play will definitely recognize the plot. The additional characters are said to give the movie a little ‘pep’, and the expected final run-time for the movie is somewhere in the region of one and a half hours. Look out for the Bashment Granny movie coming soon!
