After 20 years in the police force, crime-fighting is beginning to take its toll on Detective Jones (Garfield Reid), and by extension on his marriage. His wife Janet (Belinda Reid) is as frustrated with his lack of attention both inside and outside the bedroom and, as John continues to fail to stand-up to his responsibilities, she seeks solace in an old flame Andre (Michael Nicholson). This is, however, more than a love triangle, as Andre is now married to Janet’s only child, Cindy (Trudy Bell).

Matters become even more complicated when John invites his son Stamma (Everaldo Creary) up from the country to live with him, and he takes along his sweetheart Delcita (Andrea Wright). As the story twists and turns, Delcita always finds herself in the middle, creating more pressure on the Joneses as they struggle to keep their marriage afloat.

The Plumber will play at the Green Gables Theatre (6 Cargill Avenue) in Kingston. Showtimes are Wednesday to Saturday at 8:30 p.m., and on Sundays at 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Money Worries is a compact bank of comedy staffed by Andrea Wright (Delcita), Garfield Reid (Bad Boy Trevor), Stede Flash (Judge Stamma/Nail), Donald Thompson (Dr. Bull-Attorney-at-Law/Hammer), Sheldon Shepherd (Mr. Case – Attorney-at-Law), Trudy Campbell (Miss Cunchita Bumper), Patrick Smith (Clerk of Court) and Felisha Lord (Heat Enchunubu). The very hilarious package of entertainment is written and directed by Paul O. Beale (Unda Mi Nose series, Maama Man series, Like Father Like Son, Di Driva and Granny Rule).

The comedy skillfully explores issues of romance and personal finance and the dangers of mixing the two inappropriately. As renowned and experienced ‘ginnal’ Bad Boy Trevor thinks conning Delcita out of $750,000 is easy pickings. The result of his extensive plan and formidable tactics however, gives him the surprise of his life.

MONEY WORRIES lays out the story of Delcita (Andrea) who is in big fight with Bad Boy Trevor (Garfield Reid). They are caught up in a money conflict which sees Delcita fighting to save herself from going to prison and to retrieve a substantial amount of cash that she ‘invested’ in Trevor during their romantic fling. After the case is thrown into court, the fight escalates to Mr. Case (Sheldon Shepherd) and Dr. Bull (Donald Thompson), the two lawyers representing Delcita and Trevor. As though that is not enough pressure, Delcita’s daughter Melcita (Kathy Grant) turns against her and Judge Stamma (Stede ‘Jooky Jam’ Flash) is left to sort out the matter. Stede Flash promises to surprise his fans with his new role as the no-nonsense judge who hates when people come to court without legal representation.

MONEY WORRIES is timely comedy, typical of the high level of entertainment usually put on by Stages Productions. This is Beale’s fourth play since joining Stages, and according to him, Money Worries will be his best work to date. Mr. Beale also directs the piece. The combination of Bad Boy Trevor, Stede ‘Jooky Jam’ Flash and Delcita is a direct recipe for hottest comedy of 2009; Stages Productions almost certainly guarantees it.

The play is picked up where the story left off in Bashment Granny; that same twelve million dollar mystery. Half-A-Dog (Junior Williams), is the owner of the money, and he wants to collect his money fast. Mr. Bashment (Maxwell Grant) and Shebada (Keith Ramsay) are the custodians of the cash and they have no intention of giving it back, because too much has been invested in lounge jointly owed by Bashment and Shebada. While Mr. Bashment runs the bar, Shebada lives the daily excitement as an officer of the law. Business is going good and plans are afoot for expansion. However, within this shinny outlook lays the determination of Half-A-Dog (Junior Williams). His arrival in Jamaica sits on one main objective; to retrieve his cash at all cost. The place is then turned upside down as Mr. Bashment and Shebada try to keep the dog from his “Bone”.

The dog’s tactical romantic connection with Mr. Bashment’s bartender, Barbalita (Abigail Grant) made life more complicated for Shebada and Bashment as they struggle to hide the money. In the meantime, Shebada’s indiscretion with his firearm brought him a day in court and he employs the services of noted Ghetto Lawyer Bertram (Volier Johnson) who is trying hard to prevent his domineering wife Gloria (Deon Silvera) from serving divorce papers. The side show between Gloria and Bertram served as a delightful subplot to the issue of the Dog’s millions. Based off what I have seen in this exciting sequel, Bashment Granny 3 (the future) will be a clash between bad Boy Trevor, Shebada, Mr. Bashment and Half-A-Dog.

After his role in ‘Di Driver’, it was refreshing to see Shebada playing a brand new character in bashment Granny 2. As a less-than-honourable officer, his portrayal came off well and is extremely funny. Barbalita as the bartender, shows that she can speak and speak well (she is somewhat muted in Bashment Granny). Maxwell Grant is amazing, he plays 5 characters and he came off excellently with all of them. At 60-something years, he shows no sign of slowing down. Junior Williams as Half-A-Dog fits well in the story and with the team of actors. Bashment Granny 2 is big on comedy, big on excitement and should be very interesting to see how it measures up to its predecessor when it goes to the country.
