According to reports, Reckord died in Boscobel, St. Mary earlier today.

Reckord was a Jamaican theatre-scene pioneer. His first play, ‘Della’, was produced at the Ward Theatre in 1953, and was again produced in England in 1958 under the title ‘Flesh to a Tiger’. Reckord was quite popular in England in the early 1960s, and in 1962, he his play ‘You in Your Small Corner’ was put on at the Royal Court Theatre. It later transferred to the West End, to New Arts Theatre, and in a few months it was reportedly taken up by Granada Television in the ‘A Play for Today’ series. Reckord’s work in the UK reportedly enabled black actors in England – including the famous singer Cleo Laine (now a dame) — to get work.

For over 3 decades Deon Silvera has brought countless characters to life with her signature energetic performances and passion for entertaining audiences. Her raspy voice has become a signature of her work and her talent for generating comedic moments has made her a major hit with theatre audiences.

In JUDGEMENT she does not disappoint as she delivers more than the goods, and in the process has earned kudos from critics and audiences alike. Silvera is a veteran of her craft, having been featured in approximately 40 stage productions. These include 4 National Pantomimes and major hits such as Irie Neighbours, Single Entry, Jamaica 2 Rahtid, Front Room, What the Hell is Happening to Us Dear?, The Last Stand, When the Cat’s Away, Bashment Granny 2 and Serious Business.

Silvera copped the award for Actress in a lead Role for her outstanding work in Ecstasy, for which she recently wrapped up performances in North America. She has several sitcoms, television and radio commercials as well as movie appearances under her belt, and has recently been sharing her talent as a Speech and Drama teacher at Rousseau Primary. The school has won several national gold and trophy awards at the JCDC’s Speech Festival.

In JUDGEMENT, Silvera plays the naïve but no-nonsense Janet Smith, a hardworking registered nurse living in New York. Seeking companionship, she resorts to online dating where she finds Antonio (Andre Morris), whom she believes is the man of her dreams. Unknown to Janet, Antonio’s real identity is Richard Thompson, and he is simply using her to exact revenge on her best friend Sasha baker (Dahlia Harris) with whom she shares a dark past. JUDGEMENT is a startling examination of love, friendship, revenge and self-preservation and is a highly engaging mix of gripping drama with large splashes of comedic relief.

Written and directed by Dahlia Harris, JUDGEMENT plays at the Pantry Playhouse on 2 Dumfries Road on Wednesday to Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 6:00 p.m.

Most Jamaicans will recognize Andre Morris as the face on several national campaigns having already established himself as a major player in the local modeling industry. No wonder that audiences are delightfully surprised by his stellar performances in the smash hit Judgement now playing at the Pantry Playhouse. Morris a multiple winner in JCDC Festival of the Performing Arts as well as the Tallawah Drama Festival was awarded the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Arts and Culture in 2008. He has done several productions including For Coloured Boys, Positive, Season Rice, Ah So it Goh and What Is Fi Yuh, however Judgement seems poised to become the breakout role for this talented young actor.

In Judgement, Morris plays the vengeful Richard Thompson who has traveled to New York to get even with his past love Sasha Baker (Dahlia Harris). His vengeful scheme involves wooing her best friend Janet Smith (Deon Silvera) by pretending to be the man of her dreams Antonio. It becomes a deadly game and one that Janet and Sasha’s friendship must help them to overcome or they will both have to face their final judgement. Good faces evil, love overpowers hate; it’s a battle that audiences can’t help but partake in! In the end someone must pay…but who will it be? Judgement is a startling examination of love, friendship, revenge and self-preservation and a highly engaging mix of gripping drama with large splashes of comedic relief.

Written and directed by Dahlia Harris, Judgement plays at the Pantry Playhouse on 2 Dumfries Road on Tuesday to Friday at 8:30pm, Saturday at 5 & 8:30pm and on Sunday at 6 & 8:30pm.

Although displaying signs of her tremendous talent as early as primary school, Abigail Grant’s shyness always kept her at bay, preventing her from making that bold move towards commercial success. The year 2007 changed everything for the young actress, as that was the year she participated in the nationally acclaimed Ashe production Curfew. This provided the springboard that Grant needed to kick start her professional career, because shortly after, she made an extremely memorable entrance into the mega hit Bashment Granny. Grant’s portrayal of Babalita not only won over the massive audiences who attended the shows, but earned her subsequent roles in Shebada Comes To Town, Like Father Like Son and Bashment Granny 2. She also took the role of Babalita to another level as one of the major stars in the film Bashment Granny: The Movie.

Last year, Grant played the feisty and very mysterious Hot Pepper in the smash hit Serious Business. Hot Pepper seems to be the only one with enough information on Brother Shepherd (Maxwell Grant) to manipulate his every move, and she wields the information like a weapon, clearing obstacles out of her way to get what she wants. In the play, she faced off with Brother Shebbie, played by Keith ‘Shebada’ Ramsay, a face-off which audiences undoubtedly looked forward to seeing, because they knew that when Grant and Shebada come together on stage the witty and heated exchange of words would keep them rolling in the aisles! Serious Business also provided another opportunity for Grant to showcase her beautiful voice. Having done melodies for Like Father Like Son and Bashment Granny 2, Grant’s solo in Serious Business stirred the soul, thus displaying the versatility of this gifted actress.

Subsequent to Serious Business, Grant appeared in another Stages production – GhettOut. Look for bigger, better and more exciting things from her in 2011!

Although ‘Officer Roy Lickshot’ engages in bribery, blackmail, shady deals and lots of racketeering, it is difficult to describe him as a corrupt cop. After all, corruption suggests that he benefits or even successfully carries out these activities and, in ‘Officer Roy’s case, that’s far from the truth. His attempts in Passa Passa Daily to manipulate the people on the plaza never seem to end up in his favour, and much too often he finds himself at the end of verbal and even physical abuse. That doesn’t stop him from trying. As he moves from shop to shop like a modern cowboy, his antics provide more humour for the audience than intimidation for the plaza residents! Masterfully played by Stede Flash, the plaza comes alive based on his agility, manipulation of his body (particularly his face), and excellent vocal range.

Stede, popularly known as “Jooky jam” which is one of the memorable characters he portrayed in the series “Maama Man”, has been doing commercial theatre for over two decades. He was first introduced to theatre by actor Ronald Goshop who was his drama tutor in high school. Stede’s first big break came in 1985 when he starred in Hyacinth Brown’s “Boopsie” and since then he has starred in a number of productions.

Written by Everton Dawkins and directed by Garfield Reid, Passa Passa Daily is the third installment of the Passa Passa series and features and exciting blend of talented actors. Cleve Warren returns as the popular “Chu Chu”, and is strongly supported by the accomplished Audrey Reid in the role of “Bibsy”. The cast of plaza characters also includes…Orville hall (Nyah), Luke Ellington (Stylish), Suzette Barrett (Pearl), Patrick Smith (Mayor Blackwood), Felisha Lord (Darling) and Evelyn Forbes (Icilda).
