Report in today’s Sunday Observer newspaper: Although the results of the recent Actor Boy Awards may have been swept by the musical White Witch, the Jamaican theatre scene is indeed buoyant. In delivering the judges report at the Actor Boy Awards, adjudicator Tony Patel revealed that for the year under review — 2010 — a total of 33 theatrical productions were offered to the public … more here

Funds Needed For The Rehabilitation Of The Ward Theatre

According to a report in today’s Sunday Gleaner, despite a government grant and several fund-raising efforts, funds are still desperately needed for the rehabilitation of the legendary Ward Theatre in Downtown Kingston. The Ward Theatre Foundation held a meditation in 2007 with the hopes of raising funds. And, in 2008, the theatre received a well-needed $20-million grant from the Jamaican Government. Since then, there have been concerts like ‘Christmas Echoes’, and most recently, ‘Jazz For The Ward’, as well as other concerts, with the hopes of garnering income … more information here

Review Of Midnight At Puss Creek Play

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of witnessing my first theatrical production at the Centerstage theatre in New Kingston. This event is headlined by the legendary Oliver Samuels and Glen Campbell. Both are stalwarts in the local entertainment scene, who are universally known and loved by every man woman and child on the island.

The story is a basic “whodunit” mystery, as a dead body is discovered in the morning and the police are investigating the circumstances of the previous night. Through a series of flashbacks we see an wealthy, elderly and vile woman lays in her death bed, the beneficiaries of her massive will are summoned to her side to wait for her demise, forcing them to interact with each other and recount all of the reasons why they despise each other, and the ailing woman. Who died? Who did it? They all have motive (cue dramatic music)

While not being the most experienced theater goer in Jamaica, I found the production lacking. the characters never fully developed, and the biggest laughs generated by this “legendary” ensemble were not from the development of the storyline or from witty repartee, but rather the local propensity to massacre the English language, and mispronounce key words in each sentence. Certainly, this cannot be what passes for theater, can it?

After a successful run at the Centerstage Theatre in New Kingston, Patrick Brown’s hilarious romantic comedy, VIBES, will come to a close next Sunday, December 12. VIBES is making way for the 14th annual Jambiz Christmas production – Midnight At Puss Creek.

VIBES plays Tuesdays to Fridays at 8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. More information about the VIBES play here.
